How to Make a Fruit Salad

Simple Fruit Salad Recipe (makes 2 servings)

  • 1/3 cup blueberries
  • 1/3 cup grapes, halved (about 10 large)
  • 2/3 cup apple, chopped (about 2/3 medium apple)

Light Syrup Recipe

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp sugar

Cut grapes in halve so they are smaller and take less space, chop the apple about the same size as the blueberries.

Mix all three fruits together.

The syrup is optional but I recommend it if your freezing your fruit salad.

The syrup helps keep the fruit from getting freezer burn.

With a light syrup like this you can just stir the sugar into lukewarm water, for sweeter syrups you’ll have to heat the water to dissolve the sugar and let it cool before adding it to the fruit.

How to Make a Fruit Salad That Doesn't Turn Brown

If it will be in the freezer for a long time, more than 2 weeks, or if you are making this ahead and won’t be adding the syrup add lemon juice and sugar to taste OR ascorbic-citric acid (Vitamin C) such as Fruit Fresh and sugar.

What Other Variations Can I Try

You can use a sweeter syrup by adding more sugar or use fruit juice instead.

Use any fresh or canned fruit you want.

You can freeze mixed fruit or fruit cocktail.

Add drained pineapple, mandarin oranges, peaches, pears, mango, papaya or anything that sounds good together to you.

Serve as is or with whipped cream, yogurt on the side or add some complementary spices to your syrup.

How to Make a Fruit Salad Healthier

Rinse your fruits to get rid of any dirt, pesticides or germs from being handled.

Consider using organic fruit as well.

Freeze Fruit Salad

Place the salad in a rigid container so the syrup doesn’t spill. Something deeper instead of wider is ideal.

Add the fruit first and then add just enough syrup or juice to cover the fruit.

Take plastic food wrap and bunch it up on top of the syrup before adding the lid to keep the fruit under the syrup.

This isn’t necessary if your only freezing it for a week or two but helps if the fruit will be in the freezer longer.

Freeze up to three months.

Thaw Fruit Salad
Frozen fruit can get kind of mushy when thawed so it’s best to eat it with some ice crystals still in it.

For small containers let them thaw at room temperature just a few hours.

If your packing the fruit salad in a lunchbox just pull it out in the morning when packing.

For a larger dish that will serve more people use your best judgment, thawing in the fridge overnight is a nice slow way to thaw your fruit and then if you need it to thaw faster just put it on the counter.
